CitySwitch, LLC was created by Norfolk Southern Railroad and a group of seasoned telecommunications professionals to develop and manage railroad communication infrastructure. CitySwitch focuses on three strategic areas: new tower development, collocation opportunities on existing towers and fiber and microwave backhaul opportunities.

 

 

NEW TOWER DEVELOPMENT/CONSTRUCTION

 

CitySwitch constructs communication towers for railroad use and offers these towers for co-location to others such as cellular carriers, municipalities, and non-profit organizations.  CitySwitch works closely with the municipalities where we build towers to ensure that the towers are sited and designed in the least obtrusive manner possible, while serving the needs of the railroad and the community.

EXISTING NORFOLK SOUTHERN TOWER COLLOCATION

 

CitySwitch is the exclusive marketing agent for the Norfolk Southern's 460 communication towers deployed throughout their system.  Many of these towers are in desirable locations and are suitable for co-location.  CitySwitch works diligently to streamline the co-location leasing and approval process for these towers.

ADDITIONAL NORFOLK SOUTHERN COMMUNICATION AND SIGNALING FACILITIES

Norfolk Southern Railroad is currently upgrading and expanding their existing Norfolk Southern tower, communication, and signaling facilities used for communications and signaling as part of a system wide narrow-banding initiative. When an existing Norfolk Southern communications facility can be replaced, upgraded or shifted to meet the growing communications and signaling needs of NS while at the same time satisfying a wireless carrier search ring, CitySwitch will work with wireless carriers and the railroad to build a new tower at or near the original location, thereby creating value for the wireless carriers, the railroad, and limiting the proliferation of infrastructure in communities. If a carrier has a need within a mile of an existing communications & signaling location, please let us know as we can typically develop a new co-locatable railroad tower in roughly 6 months.

FIBER OPTIC AND MICROWAVE BACKHAUL

 

Norfolk Southern has approximately 1,700 miles of fiber/conduit and extensive microwave assets. CitySwitch works with the carriers to utilize these assets in order to create customized, cost efficient backhaul solutions.
